Shang has reached the singles semifinals at the past two Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Opens. A foot surgery kept him out for most of the first half of 2025, but on his return to the tour, he reached the third round of the Shanghai Masters 1000, beating the then world no. 10 Karen Khachanov enroute. The 20-year-old finished his 2025 season on a high note, reaching the final of the men’s singles at the 15th National Games, losing in a tight three-set match to Wu Yibing in the final.
2024 was his best year so far on the tour. Following his foray into the last four in Hong Kong, Shang followed up with a superb third round appearance at the Australian Open. He beat top seed Ben Shelton to reach the semi-finals in Atlanta before reaching the third round at the US Open. In Chengdu, he overcame No. 1 seed Lorenzo Musetti in the final to win his maiden ATP singles title, and became only the second player from China to accomplish this feat in the Open Era after Wu Yibing. Jerry, as he is affectionately known, reached a career-high No. 47.
Shang is playing the Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open for the third consecutive year.
